What Color is a Mind?
What Color is a mind?
A Class of first graders sat down for a lesson. The lesson was on tolerance and treating people fairly. The world in its busted up state had so many problems with racism and hate because of differences and colors that, obviously, many first graders have a hard time understanding it.
The teacher drew stick figures in various colors and sizes holding hands around a heart. She talked to the kids and said "people come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors. We share this world together and the differences between us is what makes the world beautiful."
A little boy in the back row, who is often quiet in class and keeps to himself, asked the teacher, "what color is a mind, teacher?"
The teacher, taken aback by this unusual question, looked a little baffled and confused. She looked at the boy and said "I honestly don't know if a mind has a color, buddy."
Unsatisfied, the boy asked the teacher another question, "what shape is a mind?"
Again the teacher was puzzled and perplexed by such unusual, yet somewhat profound questions coming from one of her students.
She answered "honestly, buddy, I don't know if a mind has a shape. These are good questions, though."
The boy was still unsatisfied, and he asked one last question, "what size is a mind, teacher."
The teacher was very challenged by these questions coming from someone so young. After thinking on them for a few days, she was struck with a realization. The little boy, in asking such innocent questions, had stumbled upon one of the most important and profound truths of being human. The mind of every person on the planet, at its core, was sizeless, shapeless, and colorless, regardless of the size, shape and color of who has that mind...and the mind is the core component of a person's being.
It is the essence of who everyone is at our base and core.
...and it is shapeless, sizeless, and colorless.
Prejudice only sees the simple, the surface, and the trivial. Enlightenment and understanding lights up our core.
