The Liberty From Deception
Of all the liberties I seek after, whether it be spiritual liberty, mental liberty, economic liberty, mobility liberty, etc., there is one liberty that I actually haven't hashed out much in my thoughts and writings, and that is the liberty from deception. The liberty of truth and the knowledge of truth. It is a liberty that is often elusive in a society as confused and distorted as this one is.
Right now, our culture is poisoned by lies. We are told lies about God, lies about our nation, lies about what is right and wrong, lies about our friends and family, and lies about what is good for you and bad for you. Deception is often the harbinger of death. If there is one thing that has killed more people than any other sin or vice, deception outdoes them all in terms of bodycount. Lies kill. Lies can kill in droves. Just look at the holocaust or Communism.
The liberty from deception is a liberty that leads to a life of abundance, peace, and security. It is a liberty that is hard to achieve and even harder to preserve. It's hard to force people to tell the truth. It is one of the most important liberties, however, as it can preserve a society for generations.
Truth is liberating. Knowing the truth and valuing it can counter a range of social ills, ranging from poverty to greed to hate. Knowing how reality works, its depth, its scope, and its intricacies leads to better decisions, more compassion and empathy, and more advanced lines of thought and development.
The liberty of truth and the liberty from deception to the best of our ability is a liberty that isn't talked about very much, but it is exceedingly important and valuable. Deception can undercut the very foundations of our reality. Like an induced insanity, deception can cripple human systems faster than even plagues or war. War, however, is one of the great fruits of lies. "In war, truth is the first casualty" as they say.
The greatest vulnerability of a free society isn't necessarily a military one, or an economic one, or even the depravity and overindulgence that free choice often leads to. The greatest vulnerability of a free society is unmitigated deception and misinformation. That will collapse liberty and collapse even governments quicker than most other threats. Lies are the great destroyer and the great murderer.
Luckily ultimate truth and absolute reality are indestructible in the end, but lies can sure make a mess of things. Freedom from deception is a beautiful thing if it's achieved, and the liberty of truth is something that is invaluable to freedom. Probably one of the most important ones.
Good night friends
