First, Do No Harm
In medicine, the Hippocratic Oath is probably the single most important oath or proclamation a doctor or medical professional can swear by.
First, do no harm. Such a simple statement, yet so important in terms of taking care of people who are sick and troubled.
I try to live by it, even though I am not a doctor or nurse. I don't like hurting people. I never want to get into a position where I'm taking pleasure out of someone elses suffering and at their expense.
It's not something that's very pronounced in my nature, hurting people. I don't want to be the bad guy.
I've been hurt a lot though, and I'm human. As a result, I've had a lot of vengeful, spiteful thoughts in my life.
Out of anger and vengeance I have hurt people in my life. Family members. Friends. I haven't physically harmed or crippled them, but verbally I can do harm. And I have.
I can be a little lippy sometimes, but I promise my bark is....quite a bit worse than my bite.
It's amazing, I've had such a fixation with being a warrior that it's ironic that I haven't been in a physical fight in 10 years. I am not a super violent person at all.
I have said aggressive things, though. Even blasphemy, towards God, and towards systems, and towards other sacred things.
I'm not super proud of it, but I honestly mean no harm.
I just want a good life. A safe life. A happy life.
Sometimes you can accidentally harm people, or be deceived into doing so out of a blindness or lack of vigilance about a situation.
Doctors and nurses I'm sure know this happens in medicine. It can also happen in parenting, teaching, mentoring, and other places in life.
Sometimes harm can be malicious, but a lot of times it's just accidental
"First, do no harm" is a mindset we all should take, not just medical professionals. The accidental harm done if we all lived by that motto would drop significantly, and the malice would cease to exist.
What a wonderful world that would be.
