The Plethora of Engineering Disciplines
Engineering has been a staple of human knowledge and creativity since we first started using tools and creating societies. Without engineering, most modern amenities and utilities wouldn't be possible, including the cell phone I am typing on right now.
A major catalyst for human ingenuity is conflict. Conflict creates the necessary sense of urgency to expedite the engineering process so we can have an advantage over our enemies.
Nuclear engineering got it's initiation in the heat of the Second World War in order for us to have an atom bomb before Nazi germany or Japan beat us to the punch and gave them a clear strategic advantage in the war.
Fields like civil engineering branched off of military engineering used in wars to sap enemy defensive structures and create physical bases of operations in foreign territories and design and construct roads, runways, and other transportation structures.
Engineering is one of the greatest demonstrations of real-world applicable creativity. Don't get me wrong, creativity in terms of storytelling is still legitimate and quite useful, but as far as designing machines and systems that can operate here in this physical realm, the mathematics and physics principles of engineering are extremely valuable.
Engineering has great economic and industrial utility, which is why it is one of the fields that has the highest financial return of the hard sciences. Engineering is one of the major catalysts for the industrial revolution, and without creative engineering it would be all but impossible for humanity to be technologically advanced, which is why it is one of the most important fields of study in our society.
It is one of the most diverse fields. Dozens of types of engineering exist, ranging from mechanical, industrial, systems, electrical, civil, nuclear, software, military, and many other forms of engineering. There are possibly methods or branches of engineering we haven't discovered yet.
Biological and chemical engineering can help create new methods of treating diseases and increase the efficiency and production output of our agriculture, helping to feed the world and prevent famine.
Artificial intelligence and quantum computing are only possible through creative engineering strategies and applications.
You can apply engineering principles to social and political institutions and organisations, since bodies of people are complex systems in their own right. There are a significant amount of ap
As I work and study at Montana State University, one of the top engineering schools of it's kind, I am exceedingly grateful I have as many professors and students to have conversations with as well as a plethora of information on a wide variety of topics. This is a great school. You can get a free education just from conversations if you ask the right questions and talk to the right people.
Have a great day everyone. Day 2 of engineering discussion week complete.
