A Greater Liberty
In my quest for greater liberty, I have pondered and ruminated on the concept of liberty and what it means to be free. I believe that Liberty is not a monolith. There are many different types and categories of liberty, and with each type there is a certain measure of how much of that kind of liberty you have. I almost worship liberty. It borders on a form of idolatry with me, and I try to be careful to make sure it doesn't actually become my god.
In my pondering of liberty, I have asked the question, "what is the highest form of Liberty? What kind of liberty is the pinnacle of the liberty concept?" I have wondered if it is financial liberty. With more wealth, you can do more physical things, and go to more places. Is it the freedom of speech or the freedom to assemble? Is it the right to choose your leaders? Though these are valuable forms of liberty, I don't think any of these are the pinnacle of liberty.
I have come to the belief that the greatest form of liberty while you are alive in the flesh is the liberty of thought. The liberty of your mind. I believe the highest form of liberty in all of existence is the liberty of the spirit. The latter liberty only completely manifests itself after the spirit's liberation from the body.
In terms of this life however, every single freedom you have has the capacity to be taken away. A matter of misfortune, if the liberty of your mind is overthrown, you can be enslaved and not even have a semblance of awareness of your servitude. You can have all the other freedoms; speech, assembly, movement, money. However, if your liberty of thought is compromised and overridden, none of those freedoms even matter anymore.
What good is the freedom of speech when you don't know what to talk about or can't form a coherent and logical argument? What good is the ability to assemble when you don't have critical analysis or understand the cause you are organizing to champion? What good is mobility when you don't know where you are going? What good is wealth when you don't know how to spend it or maintain it?
Unfortunately, even the liberty of your mind can be taken from you. No freedom in life is untouchable, incorruptable, or unmanipulatable, but if you maintain liberty of the mind, you can be in a cage, or in physical bondage, and your mind can have greater liberty than that of your oppressors. There was a saying that was uttered by some of the victims of the holocaust. I don't know the hebrew, but the simple saying goes "only our thoughts are free."
There is only one freedom that cannot be taken from you by any power or principality on earth, and that is the liberty of your spirit. Only God can destroy your spirit, and if you maintain and nurture your faith, odds are He never would do such a thing. If you have spiritual liberty, you can live in a state of grace, joy, and peace no matter how brutal, how dangerous, or how oppressive the nation or world becomes.
Liberty of the spirit and liberty of the mind are very correlated and similar in nature and expression. Liberty of the mind often leads to liberty of the spirit, but your spirit can still be liberated through grace, even if your mind is overthrown. You don't always have to have liberty of the mind in order to gain liberty of of the spirit.
As I continue my journey to achieve the highest liberty in life, I maintain a faith and a trust that even if my body is encaged or enslaved, my mind grants me a liberty in life that exceeds any political right or social privilege in the nation I am in, and my spirit grants me a liberty in death that is incomparable to, and greatly exceeds, any liberty in life. Goodnight my friends.
