The Prey Complex

The prey complex and its relationship to severe mental illnesses like Schizophrenia and other paranoid states:
Human beings, whether we'd like to admit it or not, used to be prey. We still are sometimes. We have been prey to other animals. We have been prey to other humans even. The feeling of being pursued and chased, or hunted, by another creature, or the government, or possibly transcendental and supernatural forces is one of the most defining characteristics of severe mental illnesses like schizophenia, paranoia and psychosis.

I would make the case that just like mass acts of senseless violence are possibly a result of a malfunctioning predatory drive in a human being, I also believe that the paranoia and fear involved with someone who is in a state of psychosis is a malfunctioning or faulty fight-or-flight biological system that leads someone to feel like they are being hunted or preyed upon, whether it be a government agency, the devil, or another person (just to be clear, I still believe in evil. I also believe a species preying on its own kind is evil as well).
I know first hand what that feels like. I have been in states of mind where I felt like I was being hunted, whether for the pleasure or sport of what was hunting me or for some other purpose. Feeling like you are being hunted gives you a serious chill down your spine and makes the hair on the back of your neck rise up.
When this feeling isn't 100% real, it can leave you with a trauma that is compounded not only by the memories of a horrendous fear, but also the possible lack of reality of that fear leaves you questioning your own senses and sanity. It especially leads you to question the goodness of society and what kind of world you were actually born in.
Seriously, there is no worse feeling than feeling like you are being hunted; like you are prey, and I would argue this is the biggest shared commonality and theme of paranoid delusions and schizophrenia, no matter what the theme or subject matter of the paranoia or delusions.
Since we used to be prey, every human being has the potential for their fight or flight system to malfunction. This is why it is so important to break your fear and so important for governments to combat terror and terrorism.
Terrorism can lead to a temporary state of insanity and distortion in the victims of terrorism as well as the collective mind of a nation-state. Have a good day everyone.
